Let's get Hopping!  New in 2015

This spring we planted our first 70 organically grown hop plants at the Totten Family Farm .

Hops, the primary flavoring ingredient in beer, is a vigorous plant that can climb up to 20’ or more. Female hop plants produce a flower that when added to beer imparts the bitterness we have come to love in our favorite IPA. There are over 100 hop varieties, but on the Totten farm we planted three of the most popular US varieties in 2015:

Cascade: the most widely used hops in the US, cascade hops have a moderate alpha acid (bitterness) that produces a great flavor in pale ales, first used in 1976

Nugget: a great bittering hop with a high alpha acid level, these hops are very well suited for high-alcohol beers (e.g. imperials, barley-wine, etc)

Mt Hood: Another mild hop, this variety is a variation of a popular German hop; produces a mild and spicy aroma best used for adding aroma’s to beer

As we look towards 2016 we will continue to harvest our 2015 organically grown plants but are looking to expand our hop area to ½ acre to one acre area and  expand to additional varieties of hops at the Totten Family Farm.  We will be harvesting in August 2016 for our retail sales at the farm stand, farmers' markets and craft home brewery outlets
